Young Avengers Marvel Stars Before They Were Famous

We’re still basking in the neon afterglow of Thor: Ragnarok. Black Panther seems set to blow white America’s mind in the best possible way, thanks to Ryan Coogler. And next summer it all starts to come to a climax with Avengers: Infinity War.Starring heroes across all of the MCU (despite whatever planet they were last seen on) Infinity War will be the most impressive showcase yet of the sheer amount of talent Marvel has been able to bring onto these movies. It’ll have more celebrities than most award shows. But while we may think of these folks as superstars now, they weren’t always so glamorous. So let’s revisit some of our favorite moments of when these Avengers were still young.Paul Rudd in Super Nintendo CommercialBefore he was Ant-Man, Paul Rudd played this radical little kid totally blown away by the power of the Super Nintendo and its 16 bits. With the SNES Classic now flying off store shelves in preparation for this holiday, perhaps it’s time for Rudd to reprise his best role?Scarlett Johansson in Ghost WorldBefore she was Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson starred alongside Thora Birch in this acclaimed adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ coming-of-age graphic novel. You really trace a straight line from Enid and Rebecca’s teen cynicism to Black Widow’s casual dismissal of the cosmic nonsense she keeps finding herself in.Robert Downey Jr. in Less Than ZeroBefore he was Iron Man, RDJ starred as a “fictional” young drug addict in a film that will remind you of the “Junior” in Robert Downey Jr. For Tony Stark’s de-aged flashback in Captain America: Civil War, the filmmakers actually used his appearance in this film specifically for reference.Chris Evans in Not Another Teen MovieBefore he was Captain America (or the Human Torch), Chris Evans showed off his natural hunkiness in this terrible parody released during the height of the Scary Movie spoof film resurgence. If you want to see silly jock Chris Evans, stick with Scott Pilgrim.Anthony Mackie in 8 MileBefore he was Falcon, Anthony Mackie played gangster and rival rapper Papa Doc in this sorta Eminem biopic. He gets beat so bad he’s literally left speechless. Remember how this movie won Oscars???Elizabeth Olsen in Mary-Kate and Ashley StuffBefore she was Scarlet Witch, little Elizabeth Olsen showed up in numerous kids movies starring her (then) more famous older twin sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The best Olsen Twins content is still “Gimme Pizza” slowed way the hell down, so here’s hoping there’s an Elizabeth cameo there we all missed.Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Shanghai KnightsBefore he was Quicksilver (or Kick-Ass), Aaron Taylor-Johnson played precious little scamp Charlie in this Britain-based sequel to Shanghai Noon. Having Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson hang out in the past is already weird enough for a martial arts comedy. But for a twist it turns out Aaron Taylor-Johnson is really playing a young Charlie Chaplin for some reason.Jeremy Renner in DahmerBefore he was Hawkeye, creepy real man Jeremy Renner played creepy real boy Jeffrey Dahmer in a film recounting the life of the infamous young cannibal serial killer. There’s actually a new Dahmer movie, My Friend Dahmer, out now in some regions, so you don’t have to ruin your image of Hawk-guy for some good Dahmer content.Michael B. Jordan in The WireBefore he was Killmonger (or the Human Torch), Michael B. Jordan was a standout young performer in what might be the greatest TV show of all time, The Wire. He captures the bravado but heartbreaking naivete and vulnerability the comes from being a kid trapped in the drug game. Years later we’re all still asking, “Where’s Wallace?”Josh Brolin in The GooniesBefore he was Thanos, Josh Brolin of course starred in everyone’s favorite overrated 1980s kids adventure The Goonies. Imaging a Man like Brolin as a child seems crazy these days, and even back then he felt the most adult among the children. But if you want to take the piss out of The Mad Titan before Infinity War just remember his quest for One-Eyed Willy’s treasureLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img
