first_imgDaniel and Majella with their paint denims.A charity event called “Denim vs Cancer” is set to become the most talked about fundraiser the county has had for some time. The event, at St. Eunan’s Clubhouse in Letterkenny on 10th October at 8pm will be a feast for the eyes, as denim painted and decorated by notable names and kind hearted citizens to the theme of “My Donegal” go on sale.A cocktail reception kicks off the evening that will feature an energetic line dance performance choreographed by Pinehill Studios & Karen Murphy Speech and Drama, prizes galore and a few surprises. All proceeds from the evening go to Donegal Hospice and Donegal’s Luxury Oncology Bus.The list of painters is quite impressive, coming from all areas of Donegal & from all genres. There’s Daniel & Majella O’Donnell, Seamus Coleman, Owen Coyle, Michael Murphy, Shay Given, Moya Doherty, Edel MacBride, Rory Kavanagh, Declan Bonner, Anthony Molloy, Declan Boyle, Toni Kelly, Rory Gallagher, Neil & Eamon McGee, Ryan & Sean McHugh, Sean McFadden, Jason Black, cartoonist Jarla, Adrian Sweeney, Samantha Robinson, Kevin Cassidy, Lee Gooch, Sarah King and that is just a start. Every week new celebrities are revealed on the “Denim vs. Cancer” Donegal Facebook page and the list is extremely impressive. There will also be specially commissioned pieces by artists Redmond Herrity, Karen O’Kane/Koko Designs, Kil’n Time with Michael Murphy & Marty Friel. The event started after Sheila Clancy O’Donnell, co-organizer, was coming to terms with her good friend battling breast cancer and her mother- in- law’s unfortunate terminal ovarian cancer diagnosis, both in Donegal, both within the same year.Feeling utterly helpless, she took a much needed break to her native Manhattan, when she had what she calls “a light bulb moment,” walking past a vintage shop in Soho. As a former fashion designer, she immediately recognized the painted jean project displayed in a vintage shop window held the key to what would be a sensational, unique fundraiser for Donegal’s cancer resources. If it can work in NY, it can work here.Wanting this to be an amazing presentation mixing fashion and fundraising, Sheila knew there was no better team than the creative, enthusiastic fashion students who studied under her to help. These talented individuals-Katrina McCollum, Elaine McDermott, Alan Toye, Hannah Carr, Shauna Stevenson, Patricia Doherty & Louise McPhilemy have used the Cottage as a meeting point to bounce ideas back and forth since June. Some of the fashion students who are helping to organise the event.Another individual who is such a community champion and has provided a wealth of support to this event is Alma Kavanagh. Without her and the fashion team, Donegal would not benefit from the excitement of this unique event, with the comfort of our counties Cancer patients being the mission of this event.Sheila cannot stress how impressed she has been with the support of the painters & artists, and the extreme generosity of all sponsors, especially the main sponsors Marks & Spencer, Pixelcrush Grapic Designs, Inishowen Motors & Pinehill Studios w/ Karen Murphy Speech & Drama.EVERYONE from Donegal is invited to come to enjoy this party.
