Some High School Student Started A Band Just To Mash Up Vulfpeck & Phish

first_imgEarlier this summer, two worlds collided when Phish frontman Trey Anastasio sat in with funk quartet Vulfpeck. In celebration of the double bill, which saw Vulfpeck open for Trey Anastasio Band at Colorado’s favorited Red Rocks Amphitheatre, many fans who could not make it chose to watch the show from the comfort of their home. With so many hybrid fans connected to the Internet at the same time, one musical fan by the name of Brian Murray decided to use the opportunity to premiere a new project that he’s been working on ever since the concert’s announcement in November of 2016.The result? The “Vulfmon’s Brother,” a five-piece band born from a shared love of both Phish and Vulfpeck. While the project featuring Brian Murray on guitar, organ, and vocals; Ben Pinnola on keys, sax, and vocals; Andrew Pomerantz on bass; Khalil Young on drums; and Logan Whaley on guitar and vocals was inspired by Trey Anastasio Band’s Red Rocks performance on Wednesday, the group has been in the works for a while.“I’m from Theo’s hometown of Manhasset and as soon as I heard the announcement of tonight’s show, decided to get a band together and make this happen. I’m still a senior at Manhasset High School and the others are all graduates of Five Towns College in NYC,” Murray told Live For Live Music. The relatively young guitarist will be headed to Berklee College of Music next year, where he plans on “doing this full throttle,” but has not lost sight of what got him into music in the first place. He noted, “Trey is a major reason that my life is 100% geared towards being a musician. Saw Phish for the first time at Jones Beach, 2013 when I was 13 years old and my life was changed forever.”The group has recently released a video mashing up a number of Phish and Vulfpeck tunes that shows off their musical chops. In their nearly eight-minute performance, the group merges together “Dean Town,” “Wolfman’s Brother,” “Outro,” “Run Like an Antelope,”  “Conscious Club,” “Tweezer,” “Cory Wong,” “Harry Hood,” “It Gets Funkier,” and a whole lot more along with subtle teases from across both band’s catalogs. As for Murray and the rest of the crew, we hope to see a lot more of them in the future. Khalil, Ben, Logan, and Andrew are all also in a group called Geotribe, which you can check out here, while Andrew and Logan are in a group called Zestrove, which you can check out here.
