The Mavericks were shooting 34.9 percent from the floor when they cut L.A.’s lead to 64-57 with 5:57 left in the third quarter. Dirk Nowitzki, who turned 37 in June, hit the 3-pointer, but what made coach Doc Rivers leap off the bench to call time was the fact that the Clippers had chances for three rebounds on that defensive possession and got none. The Clippers responded to whatever was said, and shot 60 percent in the third quarter, and they rose to 2-0, emphatically. With home dates against Sacramento and Phoenix next, they’ll likely take a 4-0 record into their Wednesday night reunion with their Golden State buddies. But there was little compelling visual evidence that they’re very different this year, not that there has to be on the last Thursday night in October. The Clippers have a new logo this year. We’ll get used to it eventually. But it initially looks like a bar code. Maybe that’s apropos, because this team needs to be validated after coughing up Western Conference semifinal series the past two seasons. In their last non-exhibition game here, they were up 19 over Houston in Game 6 and lost by 12, a phenomenon that even David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson found weird. They thought they had fortified their bench with Josh Smith and Paul Pierce, but Dallas’ second unit, led by Devin Harris and Dwight Powell, played better. They did get some welcome shooting from Jamal Crawford, who was AWOL in the Houston series. But we can already see that Jordan didn’t invest any of that contract money in a foul-shot tutor. He was 2 for 8 in the first half, with Dallas going to Hack-A-DJ strategem at the end. Then the Mavericks began fouling Smith intentionally, too, because the former Atlanta All-Star dipped under the .500 mark last year. Before the game, Rivers said that he felt the club’s leadership group of Jordan, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin were being allowed to lead more easily this year. Was he talking about Barnes? In any event, it’s hard to lead when you have a cannonball-sized hole in your game, like foul shooting, and you never close it.The Clippers are real good at winning regular-season games, coming up with slogans, making commercials and making noise. Huge murals adorn the western wall of Staples, where the Lakers’ banners usually are. Griffin, Jordan, Crawford and Paul Pierce are shown in full scream. Maybe that’s why they keep running out of breath.Interesting, how chemistry works. As the Clippers finally began pulling away from a team missing Chandler Parsons, Wesley Matthews and Deron Williams and wasn’t thought to be that good anyway, it took ex-Laker Wesley Johnson to connect the dots. In one possession, Pierce and Crawford and Austin Rivers spent much of the 24 seconds considering shots and never committing to them. So Johnson waited for Rivers to cut and served up a perfect bounce pass, creating an 87-68 lead.Jordan got into it briefly with Nowitzki after he accidentally elbowed the future Hall of Famer in the ear. After he committed to sign with Dallas and then backed out, he can expect a civic tantrum on Nov. 11 when the Clippers visit the Mavericks.Dallas owner Mark Cuban has already vented about this. Before this game, he sat near the Dallas bench and said, “They can change the owner and change the team, but they’re still the Clippers.”Then, during the KissCam segment, the videoboard showed a split screen with Cuban and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. Both laughed, and Cuban blew a kiss at Ballmer’s image.Rivers said everyone should chill out about Jordan and July, although he was steamed that Tom Penn, an ESPN brain, said the Clippers should apologize.“I don’t see teams apologizing when they cut players,” Rivers said, “or when they sign a player to a long-term contract and then trade him before December.“He (Jordan) was a free agent. He played his way into that. What part of ‘free’ don’t we all get?”He was right, of course. Little else is free in the NBA West, not even blowouts. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error The Dallas Mavericks were missing three starters when they met the Clippers at Staples Center on Thursday night.Four, if you count DeAndre Jordan. On the road, that’s usually a prescription for a blowout in the NBA, but the Mavericks have recovered from the loss to Jordan last July, mainly because they never had him. They made the Clippers work for much of this 104-88 victory on Home Opening Night.• Photos: Clippers beat Mavericks in home opener

By Bruce Fuhr, The Nelson Daily SportsThe Nelson Leafs are taking advantage of some well-deserved rest after playing its league tying 12th game of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League season Sunday in Spokane.Nelson is one of two KIJHL teams — the other being defending league champion Osoyoos Coyotes — to play a dozen games this early in the campaign — with the Leafs sporting an impressive 5-2-0-1 at home.“We’re happy to finally get some rest and get back on the ice to practice,” said Leaf coach Frank Maida of the early-season grind that has seen Nelson play three, three-game, weekends.“We’ll be focusing on time and space, taking time and space away from teams and being a little more aggressive on the puck,” Maida added. After assuming control of the helm on the Good Ship Leaf in August, Maida didn’t know what to expect this season. But he definitely likes what he sees as Nelson continues to hold down top spot in the always competitive Murdoch Division.“I’d say I’m very happy with our play,” Maida confessed. “If you had told me in August that after 12 games we’d have our record (to date) I would have been very happy.”“But we still have some fine tuning to do to get some consistency in our game,” he added. The addition of Jonathan Petrash has solidified the Leaf defensive core.So now that Nelson native Blake Arcuri is cleared to play, the defence should only get better in front of goalies Andrew Walton and Patrick Defoe.“(Blake) has been out for eight to ten months and has only been cleared for contact a week ago so we don’t want to rush him back,” Maida said.Arcuri saw his first action last week against Grand Forks, but was held out of the Kimberley game before returning Sunday in Spokane.“Blake looked good and his timing and conditioning will only get better with more game situations,” Maida said.Maida said winger Max Mois most likely would be back in the lineup when Nelson travels to the South Okanagan for games Friday in Summerland and Saturday in Penticton against the Lakers.Mois has been resting an upper body injury and missed the past few games. However, the news is not as good for 6’1”, 195-pound Dustin Reimer. The Vanderhoof product has been limited to one game after suffering an upper body injury during the season opener in Castlegar.OVERTIME: Summerland, 4-6, is fourth in the Okanagan Division while Penticton, 6-2, is second. Tags:#Google#mobile#NYT#web What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Recently, a tweet made the rounds criticizing the iPhone weather app, imagining Steve Jobs lurking in the background, taking sadistic joy in creating entirely random weather forecasts. If you share a similar sentiment, then you’ll want to check out Google’s latest update – a nifty, localized weather feature on its mobile website. It’s nothing fancy or sophisticated, but it will quickly tell you what the weather is supposed to be like, wherever you are, at incremental times throughout the day. mike melanson “We’d been wanting to build a fun, useful, app-like way to display weather information on our search results pages in the mobile browser,” wrote user experience designer Nick Fey and software engineer Michael van Ouwerkerk. “So we pulled together a user experience designer and team of engineers and built a new weather search results snippet that lets you actually play with the results.”The solution is simple, multi-platform and just requires that you search for “weather” using Google in your mobile browser. Upon searching for “weather”, you’ll receive a standard summary of the basic conditions, but the slider is where the neat stuff is at. As you grab and move the slider through the next 12-hour period, the sun will change to clouds or raindrops or moon depending on the forecast and the expected temperature, wind speed and humidity will change with it. Even the background will dim as the slider moves into the nighttime hours. So if you, like some others on Twitter, like to imagine that Steve Jobs is lurking in the back rooms of Apple, deviously creating imaginary forecasts to mess with your day, give Google’s new weather feature a try. If you have similar visions about now ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt, the feature works on Android, too.
